Eric, I really love this post. Having worked at a big tech company for quite a while, I see so many projects endlessly delayed by processed and paperwork and yearn for a kind of Skunk Works environment. I’m wondering if it is possible to scale up at all while keeping the same execution velocity or if it’s a truly hopeless endeavor, and the world is split between small teams that innovate and big teams doing incremental improvements. Thank you for taking the time to do the research here and I hope you keep up the work on long form articles like these!
As you may or may not know, Disney bought the building for their overflow of animators. When we visited there many years ago, they were making Tarzan and our son-in-law was a story artist. The guard at the desk warned us that our cell phones would not work. I imagine that the building was one big Faraday Cage.
